Defile Your Taxes, Vietnamese Child, 1968
Pastel on Paper 11 x 8.50 Private Collection
I entered this drawing in the #defileyourtaxes contest, sponsored by#Studio360. The rules require contestants to print out a 1040 form and do something creative with it. Having spent 38 years as a public school educator, I have always been a staunch supporter of public schools; thus, I've always been happy to pay my taxes to support them. However, I am not happy for my tax money to support the destruction of civilizations and the killing of innocent civilians, whether children or adults. Therefore, I decided that my entry should reflect the image of a child impacted by war.
This drawing will also be included in Volume II of Where Are They Now? Children of Vietnam. The first volume is available through Blurb Books at http://www.blurb.com/b/6717424-where-are-they-now
The reference photo for this drawing was taken by my husband, Carl Berning, when he served as an Infantry Officer in Vietnam. This child stood in a group of other Vietnamese children near the Cambodian border, 1968.
