I have been creating little gouache and oil studies, which may or may not become larger, more complete, detailed paintings. These studies are my explorations in color, value, shape, and mark-making. Why do I call them studies? A study is:
- A state of contemplation; reverie
- Application of the mental faculties to the acquisition of knowledge
- Careful or extended consideration
- A careful examination or analysis of a phenomenon or question
- Purpose; intent
- An object of deliberation
- Something attracting close attention or examination
- A literary or artistic production intended as a preliminary outline
- An exploratory analysis of specific features or characteristics
- A composition for the practice of a point of technique
Application Deliberation Judgment Consideration Lesson Interpretation Examination Meditation Effort Exercise Musing Pursuit Inquiry Pondering Sketch
Inspection Questioning Test Investigation Reasoning Performance Abstraction Reverie Reflection Analysis Cogitation Scrutiny Attention Rumination Finding
Comparison Thought Contemplation
“The whole secret of the study of nature lies in learning how to use one’s eyes.”
